A Podcaster’s Job

The biggest bulk of a podcaster’s job is marketing their show. In fact, it’s about 80% of the workload.  Unfortunately, when you get busy or take time away, promotion can easily be the first thing to go. However, you can’t promote content that doesn’t exist, so you have to make sure it always does.

But, what about when you need a break?

The following are some creative options you can choose for your podcast while you are on vacation:

“Best of” Campaign

1. Rather than spamming your social platforms with an excess of posts about your podcast, try featuring a specific episode on each of your days off. Post one of your “best” episodes each day, promote the post as you normally would, but try making custom artwork for this campaign. Create an image that highlights a part of your content, or teases the information. Even experiment with different hashtags to try expanding the reach of your show in searches.

Do something special

2. If you know you will be taking this time off, work up to your break by putting a little time into creating something different. If you already produce episodes monthly or weekly, create a stand-alone multi-part series to post each day for the duration of your vacation.

This gives your audience something to talk about, get excited about, and a ton of content to listen to while you’re away. Plus, you can market your standalone series to target new listeners. Get them hooked and convert them into regular listeners of your show.

Collaborate with a Co-Host

3. The goal isn’t simply to maintain your download numbers while you’re away, it’s to actually grow your audience during that time.

One way to do that is strategize on migrating your audience with a similar show’s audience. The average podcast listener doesn’t simply listen to one podcast, but several shows per week.

Become one of those other shows by having another host appear on your show, and vice versa. Dedicated podcast listeners are not just after the content, but the personality and the voice. Bringing another voice on your show can help you attract different listeners.

Of course, this takes a bit more planning on your end. But recording this episode beforehand and then airing it while you’re away is a creative way to fuel your growth while you’re actually on a break!

It’s easy to get into a groove with your podcast. You find a formula that works so you of course need to continue to deliver it. However, getting creative with that formula here and there is a perfect way to expand your audience. Intrigue your current listeners, while attracting new ones. Try something different. You may just love the result!
